Tragedy struck at the university of Nigeria, Nsukka in the early hours of Monday as a 400 level student of the department English/Literary studies committed suicide .
The student identified as Chujkwuemeka Akachi about 21 years of age, was found unconscious at an uncompleted building after taking two bottles of “sniper” insecticide in an attempt to terminate his life.
He was picked up and rushed to the university medical centre from where he was referred to university of Nigeria teaching hospital (UNTH) Enugu where he was confirmed dead.
A dependable source at the university said that the late 400 level student have made four attempts in the past to commit suicide over undisclosed reasons
An eye witness account told journalists that some students passing by the uncompleted building saw him. and raised the alarm before he was rushed to the university medical Centre.
Sources said that the late Akachi has been posting suicide messages on his Facebook wall before his death in the early hours of Monday..
The Facebook suicide note read in parts on May 12th, 2019 “forgive me. In case you are the one who found the body, I am really sorry. It had to be some one, you know. I have chosen Jo Nketaih’s poem as my suicide note: ‘They said you came looking for me. I don’t drown, I was the water.’
Where do atheists go when they die! Lol. Amen,” he posted.
Then on Monday May 13th, 2019 he posted on his Facebook wall “My mental health has been on life support for a while now. Thanks to those who call. Text. Visit. speak to me. May we always remember. May we never forget. You may have added a few hours, months or days to my time here. But you know life support is expensive right? Thank you for trying. Amen.”
Few hours after posting the suicide note on his Facebook wall , he was found at the uncompleted building unconscious battling between life and death, picked and rushed to the university medical before he was confirmed dead at UNTH.
A competent senior security personnel at the Security Department of the university who pleaded anonymity confirmed the incident.
He said this was not the first time Akachi wanted to commit suicide recalling that twice he had taen kereosine and fuel to kill himself but was rescued.
“But on Monday he drank Sniper and was rushed to UNN medical centre and later moved to UNTH Enugu where he was confirmed dead.
Enugu state Police public relations officer ( PPRO) DSP Ebere Amaraizu described the incident as pathetic.
He said that the state police command will commence full scale investigation surrounding the suicide incident at the university.
