National leadership of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, recently came to the rescue of its Alma matar an institution that was reportedly spending over N2 million to cut grasses within the school premises.
Receiving members of the national executive of the ESUT Alumni who donated seven Mowing Machines to help the university to clear its environment, an elated Vice Chancellor Prof. Anike said, “there is nothing more wonderful than this. You may wish to know that we spend over N1 million every two months to cut grasses here and we are not even satisfied to the extent we cover spending such money.
“So with this, that weight of expenditure will at least come down to some manageable extent and I promise that with the mowing machines grasses will now be cut monthly.”
He corrects the impression that the institution was still running seven faculties, informing the Alumni that the university has grown; “we are happy that you have represented the seven faculties, but note that the university now have 11 faculties.”
On their proposed project of providing support to Indigent students of the university the Vice Chancellor said the management is looking forward to when it will materialize. “We are very happy for that and I want to inform you that some of our students could, not take their exams because they have not paid their fees. So, I f they get support the number that suffer this type of disadvantage will come down. We pray that the almighty will give you the resources to materialize this proposal.
He further commend the Alumni leadership led by its President Engr. Larry Mba for the willingness of old students to come and talk to students coming after them assuring that the management of the university will prepare the ground for students to tap from the milk of favour.
Prof. Anike urge the Alumni to link their website to that of the university so that there will be seamless information flow.
Earlier, leader of the team and President ESUT Alumni Association, Engr. Larry Mba noted that the institution made them what we are today stressing that it is is in their interest that the institution continues to be one of the best in the country.
“We have made serious strides in your leadership; we anticipate to make more strides and we know that with God on our side it will be possible.
“Since we have been coming here we have looked around to see where we can assist.
We look at our environment, yes the works department is doing great work cutting it but the grass as we know grows very fast and the man who uses ordinary implements  to cut it at times become weary of doing it. So we asked ourselves how do we ensure that we alleviate such problem and thank God technology has brought about mowing machines.
“It is that belief that made us bring here today mowing machines that we will give to you to make sure that the environment here, the landscape here represents where we want our university to be.
“We have actually come here with seven numbers of mowing machines representing the seven faculties of this university.
“For us it is a starting point as we have other things that we know we can do for the university. Having our alumni members who work in corporate organizations to come in; no announcement; just give us that opportunity we draft one of them, walk into the classroom and talk to these undergraduates about their careers. This will help one or two students make a decision that would help him in his future pursuit.
We are available to do this and we have the resources to do it; it won’t cost the school anything just the enabling environment.
Our support for indigent students: we have talked about…I wish we have all the money to do what we want to do.
We are also thinking of completing our Alumni Centre; what we are doing there tells a lot about ourselves. It is taking time but there is nothing there that is not of quality. By the time it is completed it will create another environment for our undergraduates. We have a business Centre there, an auditorium and some support offices.
