Land Dispute: APGA Chieftain blames IG, Judges, for police intimidation, extortion

A member of Board of Trustees of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, has condemned the Police authorities for creating loopholes for officers and men of Nigeria Police to intimidate and extort money from people.
Chief Ezeonwuka who is the proprietor of Rojenny Tourist Village, Oba in Idemili South Local Government Area, and the Igbo Spiritual leader, Ogirisi Igbo, was reacting to indiscriminate arrests of Oba people over land matters.
He blamed the present leadership of Police headed by Ibrahim Idris for creating room for Police men to “manipulate and maneuver” in making their arrests.
He said “the present IG created room for the so called IG Monitoring Squad to come all the way from Porthacourt to arrest somebody on a land matter in Anambra State without the consent of the Commissioner of Police , Area Commander or the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Anambra State.
“It should not be so. There should be jurisdiction. Supposing the young man they came to arrest was killed who should be held responsible? This is an aberration, the abuse has to stop. Even children these days know there is corruption in the Police”.
Chief Ezeonwuka queried the rationale for multiple road blocks in the South South and South East and urged IG to remove them as they have become areas for collecting ‘tolls’ by the Police.
He lamented that 90 percent of cases coming from communities in the South East particularly Anambra State were land related matters.
He decried the spate of cultism among lazy youths who do not do any other thing except to sell and re-sell lands in their respective communities, thereby creating rooms for Police to extort them.
He also blamed lawyers, magistrates and judges who collide with land speculators and Police to frame and charge people involved in land disputes with armed robbery and kidnapping when they quite know it is false.
He lamented that these people turned the truth upside down because they wanted to make money at all cost.
“But I blame communities. They should not allow people to drag their fellow citizens to Police to intimidate them, take others’ land and call police on fictitious allegations”.
