Popular hotel in Aba gutted by fire…million naira property destroyed

A raging fire has destroyed a popular hotel, “TOURIST IN” in Aba, the commercial nerve centre  of Abia State.
The raging fire as gathered by Everyday News started around past 5pm on Sunday evening and lasted for several hours.
The source of the fire was not ascertained as at press time, but our reporter gathered that it destroyed property worth over 20 million within the hotel, burnt down a boutique and a beauty saloon.
TOURIST IN which is located at number 219 School road, opposite the Enyimba International Football Club Stadium has over 25 rooms and is alleged to be well known as one of the leading centres of top commercial sex workers in Aba.
Sources said all efforts made to get intervention of officials of the Abia State Fire Service failed, as they arrived very late when the fire had destroyed half of the structure and the entire property.
They said that it however took the bravery of some Aba residents to prevent the raging fire from spreading to adjoining buildings to cause more havoc.
Chief Chinedu Ezinwa, the hotel owner said that the impact of the fire has left him in economic standstill as the hotel is the only business he had.
“This situation has finished me. The only thing left for me now is my life. As I speak to you now I’m a nobody. I’m finished. This is the only business I have and it’s gone. The property destroyed here at least worth N20 million.
“The fire service officials came when the whole place was almost razed down. They gave many excuses. Firstly they said they had no gas, secondly they said the driver was not around and when he was called he said he went to eat.
“When they managed to fix their vehicle they arrived here and did small thing and said their water was finished. They left and came back by 7pm. It took the efforts of Aba people to prevent the fire from spreading.
“The fire service is very important. I don’t want what happened to me to happen to another person. All their tools and workers need to be ready at all times.
“Had this happened at night, lives would have been lost. I plead with government to equip the fire service so that they can tackle such situations. The workers are there, but there are no tools.”
Adding his voice, Prince Anyawu, the hotel Manager told our correspondent that the fire fighters came when half of the hotel building was gone.
“When the fire started, we called fire service, but before they could come, half of this place was gone. No life was lost, but we didn’t pick out even a pin.
“We have 25 rooms and boys quarters here. The boutique there, that hairdressing saloon and the other baby items shop were destroyed by this same fire.
“We noticed fire from room 13 but we don’t know the cause of the fire up till now. This hotel has been here since 2007.”
Commander of the Abia State Fire Service, Aba zone, Mr. Uche Okezie, denied any accusation of nonchalance from his men and said that his men tried their best to put out the fire.
Okezie added that the report got to them by 6:05pm and they arrived barely 5 minutes later at (6:10pm) and did all they could to bring the situation under control.
