Umuahia shutdown as keke operators in Abia protest

There is rising tension in Umuahia, Capital of Abia State, following Tuesday’s protest by the commercial tricycle operators (locally known as ‘Keke’).

The keke operators who grounded movement and business activities were protesting the new policy to buy ticket online.

They are also complaining high extortion and intimidation

by task force operators and security officers .

The protesters caused serious gridlock for hours in the Umuahia metropolis, where they used their tricycles to block the roads.

It was observed that passengers were forced to trek stretch of kilometres under the situation.

The protesters carried placards with messages such as “NO MORE ONLINE TICKET, ” NO MORE POLICE BRUTALITY AND INTIMIDATION”

While Interacting with the operators, they called on the Government of Abia State to order and Ban online sales of ticket stating that it will waste their time and that many of their members lack the capacity to do that and most dont have android phones.
